Most of the women undergoing mastectomy (whole breast removal) have the option of rebuilding the breast. This is known as whole breast reconstruction and it can be done using implants or patients own tissue i.e. autologous flaps. WBR can be done at the same time as mastectomy which is called immediate reconstruction, or, after some time e.g. months or years after treatment completion and this is known as delayed reconstruction. Usually, in immediate reconstruction the breast skin can be saved and used as an envelope for the flap or the implant and can have a superior result. On occasion, opposite breast surgery can also be performed to match the two breasts more perfectly. Nipple and areola can also be re-created as a final stage of breast reconstruction if they had to be removed during the cancer surgery. Implant reconstruction: Implants are inserted underneath the skin or chest muscle following the mastectomy Implants can be placed as a one stage or a two-stage procedure.
